Cult Leaders Convicted: Inside the Forced Child Labor Operation

Several leaders of the United Nation of Islam (UNOI), a Kansas-based cult, were recently convicted for exploiting children in a forced labor scheme. The cult leaders coerced children into working up to 16-hour days without pay, under the threat of severe punishment, including beatings and threats of “eternal hellfire.” The children were housed in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions and cut off from the outside world. The convicted members, including Kaaba Majeed and others, face prison sentences for conspiracy and forced labor. Sentencing hearings are scheduled for Feb. 18, 2025. Kaaba Majeed faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison as well as mandatory restitution. The rest of the defendants each face a maximum penalty of five years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
